A Day in the Universe

Surely, whenever Manny Pacquiao has a fight, the Philippines come to a halt!  But there’s another event with a similar effect—the Miss Universe pageant.

Filipinos’ fixation on beauty pageants may have originated from our strong Latin influences (300+ years’ worth) and in this aspect our cultural similarities with Latin American countries show.  In the Philippines beauty pageant is a sport, and if it were we’d be one of the most successful countries in it.

Being in the office during the live broadcast did not prevent me from “eavesdropping” with the events as it unfolded, despite the many “technical obstacles” the corporate world imposes.  I admit it’s one of my guilty pleasures, and I’m sure if I was watching it live I’d be one of those cheering as “Ms. Philippines” was called for the top 10, top 5, and eventually the 4th Runner-up win.
