PCPF Run With Doctors

Whenever we run or do other strenuous activities and get injured, we usually go to our doctors for help, but did you ever wonder if our doctors themselves practice what they preach particularly about exercise?  Well this May 01, 2011 we’ll find out if doctors can run via the Philippine College of Physicians Foundation (PCPF) Run with Doctors.  Here are the event particulars:

PCPF Run with Doctors

Or you may register online here.

This would be a great time to challenge your doctors to run if they haven’t done so already.  This event will help generate funds for the advocacies of the Philippine College of Physicians:

  • The HERO Advocacy Program

The HERO or Health Education Reform Order was signed as an Executive Order on December 30, 2006 with the main objective of ensuring effective and efficient public health awareness campaign for prevention of common diseases through the education system.  It aims:

    • To improve the healthcare system of the country  through HEALTH EDUCATION  in partnership with the government, legislators, educators, physicians, teachers, business sector, nonprofit, non-governmental organizations, associations, coalitions, in the prevention of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the country, with the ultimate goal of  creating a healthier  Filipino; and
    • To improve the quality of education of future doctors and nurses by changing the curriculum and emphasize the nobility of the medical profession, professionalism, and service above gain, so career options are not decided solely by economic factors.  Additionally, with enhanced knowledge, competencies, and skills, they will be able to provide quality care to the patients.
  • Pharmacovigilance
Pharmacovigilance (abbreviated PV or PhV) is the pharmacological science relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects, particularly long term and short term side effects of medicines.

Created in 2006, the advocacy committee’s main purpose is to make PCP an advocate and leader for patient and medicine safety.  Its objectives include

    • To inform on ways to develop the PCP as an organization responsive to global and national needs in the area of pharmacovigilance; and
    • To develop systems to promote patient safety through education and training, and reporting systems.
  • Tobacco Control
Tobacco use is the leading cause of death and diseases in the Philippines.  At present, there is a growing population of Filipino children getting hooked to the lifelong addiction to nicotine and increasing prevalence of smoking-caused diseases inflicting millions of Filipinos.  Because of this, efforts to reduce tobacco use must be a public health priority.
The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) is cognizant of this need and in an effort to help address this concern, has created the Advocacy Committee on Tobacco Control in 2008.  Its goal is to ensure effective public health literacy on tobacco use as a medical condition or illness, patient empowerment and eventually a decrease in mortality and morbidity in the country.

This event will not only be a rare opportunity to run with doctors (so I’d assume we’d all be safe during the race :D) but it really is for a good and worthy cause.  In the end you’d be helping to fund advocacies that would eventually benefit all of us in the long run.  And if you look closely, this is probably one of the cheapest Runrio races lately (and we all know how good races from Runrio are) which of course uses timing chips for accurate timing for “serious” runners.  Finisher’s kits will be given upon finishing the race.

Distance Assembly Time Gun Start
3K (Map) 5:30AM 6:00AM
5K (Map) 5:20AM 5:50AM
