TV5 to Launch AKTV Sports Block with the AKTV Run

Finally, another major local TV network took notice of sports, or the insufficiency thereof, in the country and decided to promote active lifestyle. I’m referring to TV5’s latest primetime sports block, AKTV (read “active”).

For the most part basketball dominate the limelight of sports in the country, and ironically the average height of Filipino men is a bit “short” for the sport!  Additionally, many Filipinos merely watch the game, not play it!  If it weren’t for Manny Pacquiao and other boxers who gave pride to the country, boxing may not be as popular, likewise with Team Azkals and football.  And considering how many recognized sports there are internationally, we’re really not even at the tip of the iceberg!

Singlet (Back)

When I went to Ohio, USA on a business trip I was amazed at how many sports the Buckeyes are interested in.  They love sports so much that it’s hard to tell if they really have just one past time, but to prove my point, they have at least three (3) ESPN channels in Columbus alone!  Think it’s redundant?  No!  Many times different sport activities happen simultaneously so having three allows you to cover thrice as much, round the clock.  And you’ll just love watching it because they use digital HDTV broadcast.  (Speaking of which, what’s the status of digital HDTV in the Philippines?  Watching over-the-air analog broadcasts on full-HD TVs is really dreary.)

Going back, we can’t argue that there are a lot of sport-oriented blocks on Philippine free TV, but they’re often fillers and in most cases cover only the popular ones for income.  If your sport doesn’t involve Pacquiao or Younghusband chances are it won’t make primetime.  And this is how TV5’s latest sports block, AKTV, comes in.

AKTV is the new primetime sports block of TV5 and it would be broadcasted through IBC Channel 13.  Yes, you read it right, free TV channel 13.  This would add to TV5’s current channels 5 and 41, although AKTV would just be a primetime block.  And what better way to launch AKTV than with a fun run?

Of course one may argue that it’s just another channel for the couch potato, but if people start seeing sports that they may actually join and not just spectate, who knows it may motivate them to play!  And for the rest of the sporting community, it sure would be a break from the sports news and basketball being one and the same.  We may love different sports, and with more sports block like AKTV we may have a shot at watching our favorite non-basketball game during primetime.  And since it’s on free TV you don’t need cable to watch—any TV, even you granny’s, will do!  As per the race itself, TV5 included a 3K run for those who want to start running races but find 5Ks too long.  This event is organized by RunRio.
