Sony Launches Walkman W262

There are things I’ve learned to do while running but if there’s one thing that I haven’t—that would be listening to music.  Haven’t as in never!  But it seems like the latest Sony Walkman W262 will make me think of reconsidering.  Here are my thoughts:

There are two major things I hate when it comes to running and listening to music: wet ear buds and wires.  I’m not an audiophile but I know which ones sound good—and they usually come at a premium so I wouldn’t let my “precious” get wet.  And even if you get the cheaper headsets (which normally sound subpar) most are usually not water resistant so you’d probably end up ruining it, or stuck with a wet, gross one.

What about wires?  Tangles—or worse, broken wires.  It’s hard enough to focus on your run, and wires are an unnecessary distraction.  True, there are wireless ones—but you still end up lugging two separate devices!  And have you seen how preposterous wireless headsets cost?  That’s not to mention that there’s not much choice when it comes to water resistant ones.

Sony Walkman W262

When I first saw the Sony Walkman W262 and read its specifications I thought it’s exactly what runners or any fitness enthusiasts that can’t be separated from their music needs: it is water resistant so we’re not worried about it soaking wet with our sweat (or when we run under the rain) and we’re finally free from wires!  It’s the wireless headset we’re looking for, minus the separate music player (which also saves us battery).

Last Sunday I was able to get my hands (make that, ears) on the Sony Walkman W262 during its launch at the SM Mall of Asia and what impressed me was how loud it was.  The device was also well made and it’s pretty light.  Unfortunately, I only have a few minutes with it so I wouldn’t be able to make a thorough review, but here are my impressions:

Pros:

  • Water Resistant (IPx5 rated)
  • Compact and light (32 grams)
  • Quick Charge (3 minutes for an hour’s worth of playback)
  • 8 hours playback on a full charge

Cons:

  • 2GB storage (non-expandable)
  • No radio

Black: my favorite among the color options

According to a representative that I spoke to, you don’t need proprietary software to transfer your music to the device.  It also has a feature called Zappin™ which allows you to hear a 4 or 15 second preview of the song—by its chorus!  How it does that eludes me, but my favorite about this particular gadget is that it’s washable!  Yes, after drenching it in your sweat and whatever other things, you may rinse it under running water.  Cool.  But don’t get carried away though, it’s water resistant, not water proof so don’t submerge it in water.

Don’t try this with your ordinary headset!

As much as I’d like to comment on its performance, I wasn’t able to test the W262 with my favorite tracks, so with that I could say it’s pretty much “standard.”  Remember that it carries the “Walkman” name so its “standard” is set quite higher than the usual.

The Sony Walkman W262 has a SRP of ₱3,999.

From the press release:

From strutting to running: Sony launches new Walkman W262 Series

Stylish enough to complete a look and tough enough to be the perfect marathon companion – that’s what the new Walkman NWZ-W262 series is.

A head-turner
The wearable Walkman is back and now, it’s 25% lighter than its predecessor weighing only 32 grams and boasting of a smaller and more compact look.  Discriminating fashionistas who are looking for a more stylish way to enjoy their music will not be disappointed with its chic design and wide range of colors: from the subtle white and black to the vibrant pink and blue.  The NWZ-W262 can be the perfect finishing accessory to an outfit.  With no wires dangling around, anyone who wears his Walkman will surely look polished.

What a sport
While being a looker, the new Walkman NWZ-W262 brings with it the same water-resistant and washable features making it an ideal sports buddy.  Listen to your favorite music while warming up for an intense game of basketball.  Turn up the volume to give you an additional boost to run an extra mile on the treadmill.  Go on with your cycling routine even under the rain.  Whatever it is, the new Walkman NWZ-W262 will continue to provide the perfect musical score for your active lifestyle.

Convenience
Aside from this, the compact Walkman is packed with features that make it very convenient to use.  It comes equipped with Content Transfer software which enables music lovers to simply drag-and-drop their music from their computer or iTunes library.  The Walkman W262 also comes with ZAPPIN song search technology which enables music browsing through a short audio preview of each track.  So no need to take your eyes off the road to look for music while running to find the track you are looking for.

Music to last a whole night long
One of audiophiles’ pet peeve is when their MP3 player dies in the middle of their favorite song.  With the Walkman W262, you get to enjoy eight hours of uninterrupted music playback when full charged while the Quick Charge function provides music playback of up to 60 minutes with a mere three-minute charge which is perfect for fashionistas on-the-go and those who are living an active lifestyle.

First dibs on the new wearable Walkman
Recently, Filipino audiophiles were given a chance to try out the new Walkman NWZ-W262 in an event held in SM Mall of Asia which transcended and recreated reality.  Hosted by famous music icon Billy Crawford, the participants were able to transform into different characters such as a biker, a cheerleader and a skateboarder just to name a few.  A flash mob of joggers also raided the mall to demonstrate how the new wearable Walkman fits in the arsenal of active urbanites.

So whether you want to glam up or sweat it out, the wire-free, water-resistant, washable and stylish Walkman NWZ-W262 is the ideal music player a music-lover can have.

Na-amaze naman ako sa walkman na yan. Water resistant. Okay na rin sa akin ang 2GB. Hindi naman ako madalas magpalit ng music. Hahaha, pero I also don’t use earphones and listen to music when running kasi, I am afraid to run pag hindi ko naririnig ang paligid ko. Weird no?

this one is really great! i got the previous model sony w252, the sound was nice, deep bass and zero worries on tangled cords. the only thing i notice from the previous was the weight, a lil bit heavier,so if ur running more than an hour, you’ll feel theres something heavy in the ear. i heard this one is lighter,so probably i’ll get 1. i recommend this player for those who cant separate their music and work-out. like me, work-out without music gets me bored. =)
