You may have seen the commercials about this “magical black box” that’s supposed to change the way you watch your TV, but what is ABS-CBN TVplus exactly? Well, I bought one to find out and here’s my review.
In the era of internet and widescreen digital smart TVs, over-the-air (OTA) TV broadcasts in the Philippines still remain in the analog 4:3 format. While analog broadcasts still do work well, their quality isn’t always the best. The source is low resolution compared to digital broadcasts and signal isn’t always great so even if you have the most expensive and advanced TV money can buy, analog OTA TV is your last resort. ABS-CBN TVplus is supposed to make TV watching much more pleasant by making pictures much clearer.
Digital broadcasts has been around in the country for many years now but the standards (ISDB-T) had not been defined by National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) until the middle of 2010 so unless your digital TV (DTV) is sold recently, chances are it’s incompatible and is using the former DVB-T standards the broadcasters used before the announcement. Analog broadcasts are supposed to end by the end of this year (11:59PM December 31, 2015) but it seems that it has been postponed to 2020. So the closest thing we currently have to DTV would be though the ABS-CBN TVplus.
ABS-CBN TVplus is actually a DTV receiver and a really simple box. You just attach your antenna (labelled “ANT IN”) and connect the supplied RCA cables to your TV. There’s also a USB port in the front but it’s currently only used for software updates. Speaking of which, software updates are normally received OTA. I’ve managed to receive an OTA software update on my initial use of ABS-CBN TVplus and I was actually surprised how fast it was! No internet connection or Wi-Fi required.
I got my ABS-CBN TVplus from an appliance center and the sales person was very honest on what it can and cannot do. I admit I was a little disappointed with the quality as when I think of DTV I immediately think HD and the output of ABS-CBN TVplus clearly is not, but I still got one otherwise because OTA TV signal on our ground floor was not good so we’re missing some channels, ABS-CBN in particular. Compared to using just an antenna, ABS-CBN TVplus really does receive OTA TV signals much better so the missing channels were back, but there are also channels that I also lost!
Here are the channels that I can receive in north Quezon City with our ABS-CBN TVplus (in order of appearance):

Notice that the stations do not appear as they do typically (i.e., 2 for ABS-CBN, 5 for TV5, 7 for GMA, etc.) and there are channels that you don’t receive OTA. Interestingly, I was only able to receive some of these channels after texting a keyword to a specific number (as shown on screen) using the supplied ABS-CBN Mobile. Looking back at the list closely, did you notice the missing channels? Those that I’m missing are:
- NBN
- CNN Philippines
- IBC
- Most of the UHF channels (21 and above)
I retried a few times to do a full scan but I really was not able to successfully receive these stations. I even used our roof antenna to no avail. One probable reason is that these channels are not yet broadcasting in the DTV frequency, or those that do are not in range.

Summary
When it comes to the promise of delivering clearer pictures, ABS-CBN TVplus really delivered. I got ABS-CBN clearly with just the supplied antenna whereas I wasn’t able to before using this device. In fact, all the stations that it was able to receive was much clearer than the just the OTA analog reception. But like any OTA signals, it may still suffer from poor reception. When it does, you may expect the picture to freeze or sometimes have that sharp squeaky sound like you’re watching a scratched DVD or VCD. The supplied antenna is pretty good but it can only do so much with whatever signal it receives.
Pros:
- Clearer picture quality over analog OTA broadcasts
- Relatively inexpensive (SRP ₱2,500) with no recurring costs (aside from electricity of course)
- Supplied antenna is compact but good and comes with a long cable (5 meters) and has a base made of magnet for easy and fixed placement on metal surfaces
- Additional free and exclusive channels
- OTA software update
Cons:
- “Missing” channels
- Output is not optimized for modern TVs (still 4:3 by default and not HD)
- Audio volume on the softer side
- Box gets a bit hot during operation
- Box is inoperable without remote
Overall, I could say that ABS-CBN TVplus is a good buy if OTA analog TV broadcasts is your only source, especially if your reception is a bit poor. It has its limitations though, but it really improves on what it has. The “missing” channels though are a bit of a letdown especially that there are good channels missing. But you can always use your free antenna as a workaround to get these channels back (reverting to analog OTA broadcasts). What you can’t escape though is its analog output. You may have the most expensive and sophisticated TV but your only option to connect is through RCA cables. Nonetheless, using it is still better than just your plain antenna. The additional channels may be worth considering too!

Can somebody notify ABS CBN Please,,,,missing channels I beleive are not due to locations,,,,I can see 21 channels are detected during scan,,,but only default ABS CBN and TV5 channels are displayed in the actual received signals,,,I think its the box’s program problem,,,other channels are blocked…not really missing..I bought last July 9, 2015..

Try to reset the box. Press menu>settings>installation>factory default. Then input password. The default password is four zeroes “0000” select yes and press ok in the remote control. Press menu button in remote a few times until you go back to the tv+ homescreen. Then scan again for channels by pressing the “scan” button in your remote control. Hope that helps 🙂

Bumili ako ng tvplus last oct.2015 sa robinson imus walang masagap n channel kung d abs at cinimo lng dto place ko sa bacoor dnala ko sa service center nila sa anabu imus tabi ng bdo bank sinubukan nila daming nsagap n channel like gma7 ect. Sabi skin bumili ako ng upgrade antenna nila work 800php sa akala ko at sinabi nila n mkakasagap n ng maraming channel nabigo at napagastos lng ako sayang lng d nkakasagap ng channel outdoor antenna yun inilagay ko n sa bubong nsmin n pagkahaba haba n ng tubo it means mataas n antenna pro wala p rin….itinawag ko ulit sa service center sabi nila wala n silang magagawa sorry lng isinagot sakin…. Kya yung mga nkabili at bibili p lng sure nyo muna if yung location nyo is good receiver ng frequency ng tv plus try nyo muna magtanong sa iba before u buy👍👍👍

With regards to clarity , there is no concern. It is really at par comparing with the analog antenna. Aside from some hang-ups and squeaky sounds , it is still bearable. Main concern is the lack of channels . I am from Laguna and we cannot access other channels especially GMA7. Available are ABS-CBN defaults and TV5. I thought it was just our area until yesterday. I was browsing the channels when I come up with GMA 7 and even their news channel. I was happy that the signal was clear. But after about 15 minutes , it hanged up. When I transfer to Channel 2 , it was clear. Then I returned again to Channel 7 and the signal was lost again. I don’t want to think that ABS-CBN had something to do with these. I believe that they should be fair with their customers . Their rivalry with the other channels are a different concern , their product here is the BLACK BOX. It was so disappointing ….

Ironically sa akin naman baligtad, 99% malinaw ang gma pero halos di ko mapanuod ang abs at mga exclusive channels. Antipolo area here. Fyi, nag bbigay ang abs ng outdoor antenna or ung high gain antenna. Pero ganun pa din, wala yung abs cbn channels sa amin

Gud day! How many channels fo you have. We bought TV Plus several months ago but we only have 8 channels no programs from 9 to 15. We’re always having difficulties watching our favorite shows in channel 2. M9st of the time it’s hunging and signal is lost. But getting good reception on channel 7 and 8.
I like watching OTWOL. and I cant even watch the program beacause of the said problem.

Recent software update will wipe many of your channels and erase the activation status of ABS-CBN exclusive channels. To fix this, do a re-scan and text the number with the message on the screen using the supplied ABS-CBN Mobile SIM.

Im from Laguna. Bought TV plus last Saturday and so far im happy with the results. At first installation you would notice the lagging of some channels but i tried to move the antenna to find better reception and it works. Even GMA 7 has a good reception.

I bought my TV plus last 28 August 2015 at Automatic Center in SMDC Light. In less than 2 months nag-power off ang digital box. I contacted “ALL” that I can get my hands to so I’ll be able to have it work since it was cut when the PSY teleserye was just starting. I finally had it over to its Service Center in Pasong Tamo. My question is…when is ABS going to send stocks of TV plus adoptor to their service center? Sony service center gave me a telephone number for follow up but seems bogus…ring lang ng ring walang sumasagot???

Ok lang naman gamitin kahit anong antenna pero kung hindi naman sya outdoor baka wala rin masyadong pinagkaiba. Subukan mo na rin baka sakaling mag-improve yung reception. 🙂

I receive an abs-cbn TV Plus as a christmas gift and im so happy i put it in my room but the signal is so so so low i need to put the antenna out side the room and i can’t watch tv espcially when the door is close because the signal is very very low and when you are watching the signal get choppy it stop you already miss what you are watching and i feel super very sad because im expecting if i have abs-cbn tv plus very thing will be okay but its not o feel sad and upset about that i just want to remove it and just bring it back to normal channel at list dun tuloy tuloy ang panonood ko kahit hindi malinaw hindi naman putol putol naisasara ko pa ang pinto ng kwarto sana maayos ang antenna o signal para kahit saang parte ng bahay puwede

Hi guys! Can you help me fix the color showing on the screen. Malinaw naman lahat, at sagap ko ang lahat ng channel, tama naman ang installation. The problem is black and white ang color. Diyahe! Wala man lang customer service ang ABS CBN, kelangan pa tumawag sa landline, dapat kahit naman sana mobile number na CSR lang para mas mabilis mag raised ng concern. Taga dito po ako sa angeles pampanga. Nagsscan po ako ng nagsscan 28 total channels naman ung nasasagap nya pero pagkatapos ng scan at iccheck ko mga channels 10 channels lang yung nakukuha. Ano b dapat gawin para makuha lahat ng channels? Thanks.

Bkit young TV plus ko nagkkaroon ng hang ung TV5 dati naman malinaw. Ska ung PTV 4 nwala na run bigla. Nasingit lng ung inc ska net 25 n channels biglang wala ng signal ung PTV 4 ska net 25. Ung etc wala din sana meron dito sa malabon caloocan

Guys, anyone could help please.. alam niyo ung unang lumalabas kapag nagbubukas ng TV Plus? Dapat exit lang UN diba? But happened, naclick ung OK.. Then parang may lumabas SA screen Na downloading.. I just bought last month and to my surprise, 10 channels lang ang nakukuha, 7ABS CBN and 3 GMA. i called the hotline… ang sagot sakin, hindi pa daw naka digital format ang ibang local TV stations but when i read this article, naka digital na pala ang majority. I live in Mandaluyong area, walang TV5, net25 etc…. Ang akala ko ko, lahat ng local channels magiging malinaw….. DISAPPOINTING…. I REGRET THAT I HAVE BOUGHT IT… I DO NOT RECOMMEND>

To those experiencing no audio, do a re-SCAN of the channels. I experienced no audio as well after doing a software update. Note that you’d have to rebuild your Favorites after this.

I would really appreciate if you can give me tips on how to add those other channels (gma, tv 5) etc on to my tv as this is clearly new and i spent over 2 hours to look for solutions but to no avail 😦 I will wait for your response. kabibili ko lang kapon nito abs cbn TV5 plus s Blade Megamall, un antenna nila 17 channels lang nasagap s area namin (bilibiran, bin, Rizal) ang ginawa ko, ginamit ko un outdoor antena namin naging 24 channels na pero un (TV5) di masagap, try ko ilipat ng pweste un antenna bka skali masagap ito..

Hi guys. Ung TV plus ko ok a couple of days ago. Tapos ngayon di na nagana ung receiver. Aus ung remote eh kasi triny ko sa ibang TV plus. Ung update screen lang nakikita ko sabay sounds. Just want to share my experience using my abscbn tv plus. For some that saying na bina-block daw ni tv plus ang other network such as gma and tv5 it is not true maybe yung signal lng sa area nyo or ng antenna ninyo ay mahina so you need to find a perfect place for it then try nyo ulit mag scan pwede nyo rin makita ang signal by pressing the signal button sa remote nyo pra makita nyo kung ok ang signal sa channel na hinahanap nyo.

Not recommending … bought mine 7 months ago for P2500 and I’m only getting 4 ABS-CBN channels .. okay lang, baka kako pang ABS lang talaga … then it stopped working. Called support, sabi dalhin ko sa service station. Sabi dun sira and antenna and I have to buy a new one for P395 yata basta almost P400. One month warranty lang daw ang antenna kasi accessory daw siya. GRRR …

2 months ko plang nabili ang tv plus nandito ako sa boundary ng muntilupa bakit ganun yung 1 tv plus ng kapitbahay namen may channel 7 gma news tv 5 at aksyon tv samen kahit nilagay na sa bubong wala pa din! yung hotline ng tv plus walang kwenta ang sagot parati depende sa area at signal sira ba ulo ng mga operator nyo eh mgkaparehas ko lang sinubukan ang antena ng antena ng tv plus ko at sa kapitbahay sa kanila meron saken wala! Eh buti pa yung kaibigan ko sa Calamba Laguna meron!! Aba ayusin nyo serbisyo nyo Nanloloko kau ng tao… Tapos sabi pa dahil hndi daw digital yung sa kabilang station porket kalaban nila obvious!! Pano nyo mapapaliwanag eh 1 pinto lang ang pagitan ng kapitbahay namen?? Alam ba ng NTC yang ginagawa nyong panloloko ! Nasayang na pera ko naabala pa ako.. Feedback nman sa merchandising ng tv plus eto landline ko 8157890… walang kwenta hotline nyo! grabe kau sinayang nyo lang pera ko!!

Kagane ininstall namen yung tv plus. Lage lng lumalabas “set up location” sine set namen . Since sa pasig area kame so ang pinipili namen pasig pero pag pi press n ung “ok” button. Ayaw naman. Puro left and right button lng gumagana dun sa tv plus remote control kahit papatayin yung tv pkus using remote control ayaw din.

Kainis na… 3 araw n kmi wlang signal… nailipat ko ng position ang antenna… nagtanong na ako sa text. Fb. Pati sa email wala man lang sagot kung pano gagawin…..

Cable subscriber kami before, wala kaming ibang antenna. Then i decided n bumili ng abs cbn tv plus. Sinunod ko naMan ang instruction on how to install the tv plus sa TV namin. Kaso, wala naman nanyari.. Blanko lang.. Sa guide may nakita ako na picture ng analog antenna, kailangan pa ba non?. Akala ko kasi TV plus lang OK na..

Purchased TV plus yesterday. Installed it properly per instruction sa manual. No Signal captured. Many times tried scanning. “Search Failed” . Tried to locate the antenna on higher place same result “search failed”. I live in Bulacao, Talisay City, Cebu. May problem ba sa signal sa location namin? What to do? please help. Thank you.

Binili ko ang tv plus ko oct.22 night. Excited kami kasi gumana mga abs channels at mga exclusive channels nila like cinemo etc.. Lakas ng signal namin aabot ng 80 – 90%… Then niregister sa warranty kasama name at location (batangas) namin sa 23661… Then boom!!!! Biglang 0% ung signal namin… Parang na block ung tv plus ko… Pero ung katabing bahay at bayaw ko ilang buwan nang gamit tv box nila ok pa rin.. Pero di kasi nila inactivate ung warranty.. Pota sayang pera ko….

Laging nag ooff at on ang tv plus namin. Di namam nawawala ung signal. Kasi usually nagfefrreze ung screen or may lumalabas na no signal kapag walang nasagap na signal. Nag ooff mismo ung black box. Anung nangyayari?

from Calauan Laguna.. so far ok ang tvplus na gamit ko. malinaw lahat channels. 19 channels pero 10 lang ang napapanood. my question is bakit walang tv5 and aksyon tv? laban pa naman ng Gilas! and gusto ko manood PBA.. ano pede gawin? thanks

may i ask how to fix system upgrade timeout? 3 days ng wlang signal ung tv plus namin. sabi system upgrade will took up 10-20mins but it wont go through dahil nagta-timeout. please help

As we are going to Philippines very soon from US, I am now wondering if the once Free converter boxes here in US that converted the new at time digital stations for the old digital US TVs. I have a box to go & may put one unused & now obsolete small box in the bulickbyon box. I think they had a F connector output ( most ck). Any feed back on this? Might be a flood of old boxes useless here going over!

hi, meron akong lumang tvplus at bumili ako ng bago .. ung luma working sia at tinest ko ung bagong tvplus.. pagkakabit ko ng bago, no signal sia.. kung ano pwesto ng lumang tvplus na antenna same din sa bago.. tapos binalik ko ulit ung lumang tvplus pero ganun na din ang problema ‘no signal’ na .. tinry ko sa ibang tv ung luma at bagong tvplus at nilagay sa bintana ang antenna.. ayaw na talaga gumana ng luma pati ng bago .. sinunod ko naman po yung sa manual.. pahelp po ako.. salamat

abs-cbn is still using 4:3 format. binanat lng nila ang picture kaya akala mo 16:9 which is the format of LED TVs today. cnn philippines lng ang nakita kong may true 16:9 format but now di ko na sila makita sa Digibox ko.
