Behind the Scenes: Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Regional Selection Camp Baguio

Last February 20-21, 2016 at Benguet State University, the Regional Selection Camp (RSC) of Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Philippines opened its doors to boys and girls aged 10-14 years of age.  I was able to catch this two-day event firsthand and here’s my behind the scenes look at this event presented by Alaska Milk.

The calm in between the storms 🙂

Day 01

The day started early with the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Philippines Regional Selection Camp hopefuls and it started quite actively.  We arrived at Benguet State University before 10AM but their gymnasium is already teeming with aspirants, both boys and girls, waiting for their turn for the initial evaluation.

Some of the aspirants queuing up on stage for their tests

Their height and wing span were measured

Then came their first physical test of the day, push ups!

And yes, that’s how many kids were lined up when we entered the gym…

You’d just be surprised how diverse boys and girls 10-14 year olds can be.  Some were so short while some were so tall that you won’t expect them to be in this age range!

They also had to show their moves while dribbling a basketball

And of course, shoot some hoops

Activities were in full swing as well on their open gym where the participants moved next…

Shooting and bouncing the ball into that hole is not that easy

Agility is also tested as they ran forward, backward, and sidewards alongside these cones

At the end of a long day, a simple program was held with some participants picked to play against Alaska Milk’s basketball-playing mascot, E. Cow.

Yes, E. Cow can play!

You may find it interesting that some of this year’s aspirants came from Southern Luzon provinces, as far south as Batangas!

And of course, we can’t forget the mandatory “class picture.” 😀

Finally, the numbers and names of those that stood out were announced.  The top 50 boys and 24 girls moved on to the next stage held the following day.

I can’t help but be impressed with how they generated their results that quick considering everything was done manually.  All 665 participants’ entry forms were paper-based and each one’s overall score had to be computed one by one manually with a calculator and encoded into the computer one at a time as well.

Day 02

The second and final day of the camp had arrived and it’s the last chance for those who were picked from the day before to prove themselves worthy to go to Manila for the National Training Camp.  They were grouped into teams and were made to face other teams in actual basketball games.  As in all the other teams, one after the other, consecutively!  Here are some scenes from the scrimmage:

You’d just have to applaud these aspirants for enduring all these consecutive games!

A short program was held after all the scrimmages were completed.  There was also that chance to play with E. Cow as well for a select few.

And then this happened…

E. Cow lost his head in the game, literally! 😀

Finally, the moment of truth arrived…

For the Baguio leg of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Regional Selection Camp, two (2) girls and six (6) boys were picked to play for the National Training Camp in Manila on April 22-24, 2016.  The finalists for the girls were Treena Areola and Rae Jemima Caba, and the boys were Vincent Madiwo, Sergz Quitaleg, Emmanuel Macaranas, Jan Zyrus De Ayre, Wrench Mason Roquid, and Ric Ozner Gatuz.

The next leg of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Regional Selection Camp will be held in Davao (February 27-28), Cebu (March 05-06), and Metro Manila (April 09-10).
