2016 PRUride to London

As a runner, a cycling event seldom excites me but the upcoming PRUride to London event by Pru Life UK on November 12, 2016 does.  Here are some of the reasons:

Pru Life UK to Hold First Cycling Event, Proceeds to Fund Bike-Friendly Projects in Metro

In celebration of its 20 years in the Philippines, British life insurer Pru Life UK—a subsidiary of international financial services group Prudential plc is bringing the legendary Prudential RideLondon to the Philippines through its first cycling event, PRUride to London, on November 12, 2016 at the McKinley West and Uptown Bonifacio in Taguig City.

The Company partnered with the National Bicycle Organization (NBO) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority for the event, which aims to promote safe cycling in the Philippines.  All proceeds will fund NBO’s bike-friendly initiatives in road safety, bike lessons, and bike commuting.  Moreover, part of the proceeds will fund bike projects such as racks and lanes in selected cities inside and outside Metro Manila.

The one-day event will consist of a criterium race for professional cyclists at the McKinley West, as well as a bike community day for friends and families at Uptown Bonifacio.  Cycling enthusiasts can choose among the following categories:

  • Small Wheels Male
  • Small Wheels Female
  • Juniors Boys 15 to 17 year old
  • Juniors Girls 15 to 17 year old
  • Fixed Gear Open (Mixed)
  • MTB Male 25 year old and below
  • MTB Male Open
  • MTB Female Open
  • Road Bike Male 18 to 25 year old
  • Road Bike Male 26 to 35 year old
  • Road Bike Male 36 and above
  • Road Bike Male Open
  • Road Bike Female Open

Likewise, friends and families can go to the event for a bonding session over fun cycling activities, such as free use of bikes for cycling along carless lanes for kids and adults, ramp courses, and bike rodeo, Cha-Ching booths, among others.

Participants can look forward to receiving a PRUride full-sub jersey, PRUride finishers’ shirt, after-event food and beverage.  Also up for grabs are four all-expense-paid trips to London, folding bicycles, cash prizes, and other exciting items for both race and raffle winners.

Basically, there are two events simultaneously happening this weekend: the Criterium Race and the Community Day:

The Criterium Race is for those competitive bike enthusiasts looking for some weekend challenges.  Cash prizes are in store for the top three winners of each category with a trip to London for the winner of the Road Bike Male and Female Open!  This is to be held at McKinley West.

The Community Day is for everyone looking for some family bonding activities during the weekend.  Everyone is encouraged to drop by as most of the activities are free, but if you want to get the Pru Life OK bike jersey, you must register quick as it’s only for the first 1,000 registrants.  Registrants also qualify for the raffle where you can win foldable bikes and an all-expense-paid trip to London.  This is to be held at the Uptown Mall, Uptown Bonifacio.

So why does this cycling event get me excited?  First, the prizes.  Trip to London for the winners in the Criterium Race and lucky registrants to be picked in the raffle at the Community Day.  Another is that all the proceeds will go to funding bike-friendly projects around Metro Manila.  And have you seen the bike jersey?  The registration fee of ₱500 more than justifies that.  And finally, even if you don’t have a bike, do drop by the Community Day as they have bikes you may borrow at the event for free!  There are also lots of activities you can join and learn from.
