The adidas Runners Manifesto

This is not just another sports club.

This is your favorite bar, your date you’ve been looking forward to for weeks.

It is the group of friends that keep you going and kick your ass so you stay on top.

This is not just about running.

This is about being your better self.

This is what you were looking for.

Like the massage that hurts and helps at the same time.

The wobbly knees you haven’t felt for so long.

The pain that feels good.

The party that is well deserved—and—you’re on the guest list.

This is the first step to creating your story of success.

You got this.

And we will help you get there.

This is fun taken seriously.

In Manila, runs will be led by Captains Jules Aquino, Maureen Schrijvers, and Ani De Leon-Brown.

Jules, who also models on the side, grew up competing in different sports—from swimming to tennis to American football to being a decathlete for the UP Diliman Track and Field team—fitness is something he breathes and lives for.  Embodying the creator that he is, Jules recently launched a YouTube channel with his twin brother, to inspire others to start their fitness journey.

Maureen’s love for running started at a very young age.  As early as the first grade, she challenged her boy classmates to race against her during recess.  She soon realized that this fondness for running wasn’t just a mere hobby, but something she saw herself competing in.  In the 2012 Palarong Pambansa, Mau won gold in the 100 and 200 meter dash events, as well as lead the NCR’s secondary girls team to first place finishes in the 4×100 meter relay and the 4×400 meter relay.  She also broke the secondary girls’ high jump record and was named MVP that year.  She continued competing in the UAAP and represented De La Salle University, being one of the top seeds of her generation.

Completing the trio of captains who will be leading adidas Runners Manila is an athlete that needs no further introduction, the “Iron Lady” and the first Filipina to qualify and compete in the Ironman World Championship, Coach Ani De Leon-Brown.  With her long list of accolades, she is considered one of the most in demand triathlon coaches in the country.

“With AR Manila, we’re building a community that’s united by our love for running.  As captains, we’re here to push our runners to get better each week and have fun doing it,” Coach Ani said.

There will also be a full expert team on hand, including running coaches and pacers, a strength coach, nutrition coach and a medical coach to inspire and motivate all members to push for progress and get the most enjoyment out of each session.

A truly global network, members can feel at home in any city they visit by connecting with the adidas Runners squads around the world to run, create and party together whilst exploring the city.

Activities were lead by adidas Runners Manila Coaches.

adidas Philippines Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager Jen Dacasin said, “Each urban runner has a different goal.  Some want to smash a PB, some run to clear their mind, and others do it as a way to get fit.  Whatever their reason, we know that runners are energized and motivated when they come together for the same passion and get to feel like they’re part of something bigger.  adidas Runners Manila is us creating a network like never before.  We want to unite all kinds of runners to do what they love—run—while at the same time have a great time.”

adidas Runners Manila was launched with a preview of what’s in store and I arrived just in time to join the last batch of runners doing so.  I was expecting the usual run around Bonifacio High Street, but I was surprised when we quickly stopped at Track 30th shortly after starting our run.  And as I had just run 5K a few minutes earlier, this warm-up proved to be a challenge for me.

Our warm-up drills at Track 30th

This was then followed by a run around BHS which led to Terra 28th where our next set of activities awaited.  We did a few rounds of drills that complement running.

Held our drills at Terra 28th

Finally, we did another round of running and interestingly, we ended at Ascott BGC Manila.  It’s the first time ever that I’d enter a hotel while still drenched in sweat and I’m actually surprised the property is fine with it.  Anyway, the main program ensued which included the introduction of the coaches, VIPs, etc.

adidas Runners Manila is a welcome addition to the growing number of running/training clinics in Metro Manila.  The drills that they incorporated in between runs were fun yet challenging so you can get your dose of miles and fitness at the same time.
