Images of the recent devastation of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) has just been heartbreaking. But watching the news won’t do anything, we need to act. There are many ways we can help: we can donate our time, share our blessings, or both.
Since we may not know exactly what is needed, the best donation we could give is cash. But with all the “foundations” you’ve never heard of suddenly sprawling, we have to be wary on which one to entrust our money. Personally, I prefer giving donations to the Philippine Red Cross, which over and over again helped the country through countless catastrophes.
For those who have extra load in their mobile accounts, donating to the Philippine Red Cross is very easy. You send RED <Amount> to 2899 for Globe and 4143 for Smart subscribers. You may donate the following denominations:
- Globe: 5, 25, 100, 300, 500, or 1000
- Smart: 10, 25, 50, 100, 300, 500, or 1000
For example, to donate ₱50, send RED 50.
Even a small amount goes a long way if we all contribute.

You may also donate your time by volunteering to help pack the relief goods for distribution. These organizations are spread all throughout the country, just make sure to contact them for schedule before dropping by their warehouses as some of them don’t accept “walk-ins.” For those in and around Metro Manila, you can check this consolidated list of repacking sites.

Lastly, if you neither have the physical capabilities to help in packing nor have extra money to spare, you may still help. Prayers. Sometimes we just don’t realize the power of prayers.

Everyone in their own way can help. It’s better that we be on the side that’s giving help rather than the one receiving it. With calamities reaching unexpected places, we can only hope that one day we don’t end up on the other side of the news. Let us help however we can, whenever we can.
