Quickie Tour: SM Mall of Asia and its Arena

It’s been quite a while since I was last at the SM Mall of Asia, and like with other business centers in the country the development in the area is going full throttle.  Among the most prominent structures under construction is the SM Mall of Asia Arena.  Here are some pictures from my quick tour of the area:

It was a Sunday and a mall-wide sale was on-going when I was in the area so you can just imagine how many people crowded the huge compound.  I was there ironically not for shopping, but instead for a product launching.  Afterwards, I started my “photowalk” to see the many changes in the area.

Of course SM Mall of Asia is known for being mostly outdoor-oriented
With nice bridges connecting the mall buildings
Even the main mall is having face-lifts
Isn’t it obvious which company resides here? 🙂
Where to?
The One E-com Center: one of my favorite spots in the area because it houses a branch of my gym which is practically my home away from home 🙂
The Philippines’ first IMAX Theater
One E-com’s new neighbor
At the bayfront
In fairness, the bay is “clean” although there’s not much to see but rocks
Food lines up the bayfront, perfect after running 🙂
This one was unexpected: there’s a zipline!
Another view of the zipline: it’s the lowest and slowest one I’ve ever seen but it’s good enough
This one is called “Aray Ko, Galing Ko”
I have no idea what this is

...home to numerous conventions
Residential condominiums rising in front of the mall compound
The globe in front of the mall which also marks the end of EDSA Extension, as seen from the SMX side

The SM Mall of Asia is one of the best places to run in the Metro, and like its Bonifacio High Street counterpart, fast development is compromising our running routes here.  Already, the area gets crowded at times, but it’s still definitely one of the best places to eat after a good run!

The SM Mall of Asia Arena would be a good addition to our aging concert venues.  Could it be the end of open air concerts in the area?  I guess we won’t know until 2012.

With the construction of another indoor stadium, it made me wonder, when will we see a stadium oriented for sports?  I doubt that the Mall of Asia Arena will have an indoor track, and there’s really not much space in the metropolis dedicated to sports.  I hope that in the future, some private entities also consider investing in these infrastructures.  We can’t really encourage people to get fit if we don’t have facilities that allow them to do so.
